Kaunas Žalgiris Arena is one of the biggest arenas in the Baltics. The capsule, symbolizing the beginning of the arena construction was festively put into the ground of Nemunas island in 2008.
In collaboration with Schüco Lietuva and building architect Simas Eugenijos Miliūnas, “KG Constructions Group” created aluminium-glass construction systems, that is around 30 unique aluminium profiles, which met high architectural demands. These extraordinary architectural design elements that weigh up to 300 kilograms. These heavy profiles were painted in a colour, created by the Swiss company IGP specifically for this project. This makes the building especially unique.
Facades facing the sun were glazed with special sun-controlling double-glazed units. All glass used for the building was exceptionally transparent and their units are more transparent than typical glass. The total area of aluminium-glass constructions is 8000 square meters.
The arena was officially opened on 18 August 2011 to mark the 600th anniversary of Kaunas self governance. The arena has a capacity of 15 000 people, which is why Eurobasket 2017 were organized here in 2011. This is the second building on an island in Lithuania, the first being Trakai Island Castle.
